SA energy crisis grows with Eskom’s new tariff increases

South Africa is facing an escalating energy crisis. Our country is entangled in a web of challenges stemming from several interconnected factors. At the root of this is economic pressure is the need for reliable and affordable electricity and the complicated balance between supply and demand.

Our sluggish economic growth has led to a stagnation in overall electricity demand as organisations struggle and consumers tighten their belts, there is less consumption of the electricity volumes once anticipated which is leading to a downward trend in usage.

On the other hand, the cost of electricity has been exponentially climbing, consistently outpacing inflation rates. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) approved a significant electricity tariff increase of 12.74% for April this year to address the financial challenges faced by Eskom. This upward trajectory has hit consumers hard.

South Africa’s current inflation rate is sitting at 5.6% alongside the increase in Eskom’s tariffs at a staggering 12.74%. This means that even if businesses manage to grow their sales, operations and profits, there’s little to no chance battling the growing expenses to keep the lights on and operations running as usual. A step towards solar and a more sustainably independent approach to power closes the gap and can increase your return on investment in the long run.

For many companies the shift towards renewable energy is crucial. Solar energy offers businesses a range of direct benefits that contribute significantly to operational resilience and cost-effectiveness. Solar panels and infrastructure allow enterprises to generate their own electricity, reducing their dependence on the national grid. This ensures a consistent and reliable power supply to maintain operations without interruptions or downtime.

Selecting the right provider who has expertise in in the following is essential to maximise the system’s performance and return on investment:

  • System design

  • Quality assurance in component selection

  • Compliance with regulations and customised solutions

  • Ongoing support

  • Maintenance and monitoring

RenEnergy's commitment to quality, compliance and ongoing support ensures that your solar power installation operates at peak performance, delivering tangible benefits in terms of cost savings, energy efficiency and environmental impact.
